GLACE BAY, NS – Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, congratulates Five Nations Clam Company on being awarded a new license for Arctic Surf Clam.
“This is significant step towards reconciliation and a great opportunity for Indigenous communities from all the Atlantic provinces to benefit in a shared resource. Our government has been committed from day one to developing a renewed, nation-to-nation relationship between Canada and Indigenous peoples, and this announcement is proof of that,” said Cuzner.
The new license for the Arctic Surf Clam fishery will be issued to the Five Nations Clam Company, a new entity comprised of First Nations from Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Five Nations Clam Company partner to harvest, process and market the catch will be Premium Seafoods from Isle Madame, Cape Breton.
“I am happy that a local Cape Breton company, Premium Seafoods, will be a partner. This will allow Cape Breton-Canso to share in some of the economic benefits of this licence. Premium Seafoods has a proven track record of developing strong successful relationships with many Indigenous communities based on respect and a desire to ensure mutual benefit from the commercial fisheries, and take steps towards reconciliation,” said Cuzner.
